Russia’s GAZ to find assembly partner for former GM site by July

NIZHNY NOVGOROD, Jan 24 (PRIME) -- Russian carmaker GAZ Group plans to find a partner to assemble cars on a site in the city of Nizhny Novgorod, formerly occupied by General Motors (GM), until the end of June, GAZ Group’s CEO Vadim Sorokin told reporters on Tuesday.

“We are working now, the economy is rebounding, problems with sanctions are becoming not so sharp. There is interest to the site…GAZ is rather confident today, and it will only make us stronger if a new company comes to the site,” he said, adding that the group will “define a partner until the end of first half-year period.”

GM stopped contract assembly of its Chevrolet Aveo cars at GAZ Group’s site in the city in the summer of 2015. In November 2015, Manfred Eibeck, CEO of the parent company of GAZ Russian Machines, said that Japan’s Isuzu, China’s Foton, and Chinese state corporation Norinco, which includes carmakers Beiben and Ñhangan among other companies, were interested in the site.
